Krakow, Poland

As you read this, I will be returning from a short trip to Krakow, Poland, so expect some posts about this intriguing city in the next few days.
Here are some “fun” facts about the former capital of Poland:
-
The city attracts at least seven million people each year.
-
The historic center which includes the old town, the Jewish Quarter (called Kazimierz), and the Wawel Castle became a World Heritage site in 1978.
-
According to Wikipedia, the city’s full official name, used on ceremonial occasions, is Królewskie Stołeczne Miasto Kraków, meaning “Royal Capital City of Kraków”. In English, a person born, or living, in Kraków is a Cracovian.
-
Named the European Capital of Culture for the year 2000 by the European Union, the city has many museums, galleries, and concerts.
-
Popular tourist sites include the Auschwitz/Birkenau concentration camp, the Wieliczka salt mines, and Ojcowski National Park.
