Morocco, Here I Come!

I’m leaving today to spend a week in Morocco, a country in Northwest Africa known for its tea, markets, and deserts.  Admittedly, I’m a little anxious about the trip.  Although I’m traveling with another well-experienced traveler, some of the stories about the persistence of men, the demanding sellers, and the opportunities for petty crime leave me a little unsure about what to expect.

But…those are some of the same reasons I’m excited about the trip.  It’s certainly different from little ol’ Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, we’ll meet some interesting people, and I hope to learn a few things about this very different culture.

Expect some posts about the markets in Marrakesh, Moroccan cuisine (we’re taking a cooking class!), the riads we’re staying in, and more after I return on February 20th.

I will continue to have daily posts with interesting travel tidbits, helpful tips, and some good pictures, so please continue to visit while I’m gone.  I will return to Entrecard as soon as I return as well.

Until then, here are some interesting facts about Morocco from LifeStyle Lounge (visit the site for more):

  • The official name of Morocco is the “Kingdom of Morocco.”

  • Morocco gained independence from France in 1956.

  • Morocco is situated in North Africa and it is the only African country that is presently not a member of the “African Union.”

  • The official language of Moroco is Arabic.  However, Berber (another dialect) and French are also spoken widely.

  • The University in Fes, founded in 859 AD claims to be the oldest university in the world.

  • Tangier was an International City, from 1922 to 1956, being ruled by representatives of eight European countries.

I would love to visit Morocco as I like the music and culture and the food is awesome. I used to cook Tagine when I was in the U.K because I have a Tagine pot over there.

Thanks for the well-wishes! I returned late last night and did have a great time–we visited Agadir, Essaioura, Marrakesh, Tafraoute, and Tiznit. I took a cooking class, bought stuff in Arabic, and took lots of pictures. Be sure to check back for posts about the trip.
