A Unique Sight in New York City–The Naked Cowboy and Cowgirl
Travelers, myself included, are often looking for a unique aspect of a destination—a great restaurant, a fun event, an out-of-our-comfort-zone experience that will later turn into a long-lasting happy memory. In New York City, the Naked Cowboy and Naked Cowgirl are just such sights. Tourists expect to see these zany characters when visiting Times Square and love to snap photos with the musicians.
Robert John Burck began his career as the Naked Cowboy in 1997 when he realized that he made more money playing his guitar on the street when he only wore underwear, his boots, and a cowboy hat. His fame quickly grew and he’s become an icon of Times Square and a regular in several advertising campaigns. (He’s also been featured in some documentaries, posted some writings on his website, and produced a CD.)
In 2005, the Naked Cowboy received a partner when Louisa Holmlund donned a mini-skirt, boots, a hat, and “Gina’s Gems” to become the Naked Cowgirl. (I should mention here that I know Louisa; I was her supervisor at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort and I still have her resignation letter where she explained that she was resigning to become the Naked Cowgirl—it was quite humorous.)
The singers can be seen in Times Square during the warmer months, but can also be hired for special events and the Naked Cowboy will even perform wedding ceremonies right in Times Square (he was recently ordained).
The next time you visit New York City and visit Time Square (which I’m sure you’ll be doing), be sure to look for the half-dressed person with a guitar singing a song and posing for pictures. Give them a few bucks and pose for a picture—now you have proof that you’ve really seen something unique in New York City.

Jakill–I’m afraid New York City is one of the places I haven’t visited yet, but I can just imagine the energy of Times Square and I’m sure the Naked Cowboy/Girl are a great part of it. (Those crazy Americans!)
Lauren–Yes, I’m sure your life is so much better now that you know about the Naked Cowboy.
Glad I could help.
Fortuitous Faery–I loved the commenter that said “these are really hard times.” Great picture!
