Money-Saving Travel Tips

I don’t really know if I’m supposed to share these tips on how to save money while traveling, but I’m going to assume that since they were sent to me via e-mail they’re supposed to shared…
The Society of American Travel Writers (SATW), a professional association for travel writers, photographers, producers, and public relations reps, recently shared Top Ten Tips on How to Save $$$ while traveling. Now, who better to give advice on saving money while traveling than experts who travel for a living and need to know about all the inner-workings of the travel, food, and hospitality industries?
Bea Broda, the president of the SATW, says “There’s never been a better time to travel. With the economy the way it is, there are deals everywhere—and the Internet has made them easy to discover.” So even though the economy seems to be taking a dive, traveling has become even easier and cheaper—the US dollar is performing better against foreign currencies, hospitality companies are offering spectacular deals, and it’s happening all over the world.
Some of the tips from the SATW members I’ve heard before (“Travel in the off-season or on the edges of popular seasons”), while some are newer ideas for me, but certainly make sense (”Make your first stop the local visitors center and collect coupons, brochures, free maps, etc.“)
These experts have more great advice on saving money during your next vacation, so be sure to check out their list—even if you think you’re already an expert. We could all always use some extra cash!

Thanks for the tips!
#9, the house swap concept, is something I’d be very reluctant to participate in… unless I had a house that was essentially a two-in-one or something, where I could securely lock guests out of the rest of MY area (especially since I wouldn’t be there, y’know?).
#10, asking “is this the best rate? do you have any specials” is something that must be done live (phone or at the desk)… that’s where booking via expedia and other travel sites might be a disadvantage, but it’s so convenient!
The others are things I already do anyway, pretty much! Especially when in expensive places like Switzerland!! No way I’d eat at a restaurant! The big department stores have cafeteria-types places that are (relatively) cheap, but even then… I’d rather pack a lunch. Food costs can burn a big hole in one’s pocket.
@darkly–No problem! Everyone needs money-saving tips all the time!
@lynne–I don’t think I’d ever do an actual house swap, but I might try couch-surfing or one of those other similar options; it seems like a great way to really get to know the locals! (Check back later for a post about these options during my upcoming Unique Accommodations series.) A lot fo the tips are fairly common sense, but a little reminder certainly helps!
